An integral part of my approach is working directly with a family until the intervention is completed. My personal experience with language-based difficulties in my family made me aware of its impact on all family members.
Intervention
A Service Plan is based on clinical test results as well as observational findings provided by the parent(s), teachers and outside testing results.
I consistently remind parents and children that a diagnosis is only a statement of where they are at the moment. It does not define them or determine where they are going--that journey is determined by the child's involvement and parent support. As a result, the approaches during intervention is changing as the child changes.
Goals and objectives are achieved by partnering with parents to help their child find success reaching his or her interest, dream or long-term plan while strengthening their learning skills to reduce the impact of dyslexia, other reading challenges, speech difficulties and/or social language problems also known as pragmatics.
Implementation
My services are provided typically with a student and parent participating in the session. It is also conducted with the student alone while a parent waits in the reception area. Verbal and written feedback is provided as the session is concluding.
The family-centered approach in therapy has been highly successful. Family involvement helps to merge new strategies into the home and school settings helping to establish them more quickly.
Our small group is an integral element in acquiring these skills. It also helps parents to appreciate the challenges their child faces when making changes to reduce the impact of dyslexia, reading weaknesses in the area of vocabulary and/or comprehension, written expression, speech, receptive and expressive language and or social language.
